The Prairie Pioneer Quilters were organized in
August of 1986 to encourage an appreciation
of the art of quilting by providing educational meetings, travel, fellowship and the promotion
of a variety of quilting activities.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, August through May (except December).

Hello there Ladies (and maybe a gentleman or two)

Welcome to our website.  We are the Prairie Pioneer Quilters.
This group has been a gift to me.  Our family moved to Grand Island, Nebraska five years ago when my husband was hired at the VA Hospital.  As with any move to a new town, it takes a while to find your place.

Thankfully my sister got pregnant!  Because. . . I was inspired to make a baby quilt for my new nephew.  Looking back I did not know what I was doing.  The quilt was all blue.  There was no contrast.  I didn’t know how to attach binding.  I just laid the two ends together and zig-zagged back and forth to hold it down.

But when I got to the quilting stage I needed a walking foot.  I made a visit to my local Quality Sew & Vac, where I drooled all over the Berninas.  I made it home with my walking foot and my machine started making a crunching noise.  So. . . I went back to Quality Sew & Vac and came home with one of those Berninas.  That was when I was connected with a scrappy quilting club that met once a month.

The ladies were talking about quilt guild.  I didn’t know when or where the meetings were held, so I called our local quilt shop hoping to get the needed information.  I showed up at a guild meeting, joined, and sat down with one of the ladies from the scrappy club.

The speaker that night was a long time guild member.  She knew what she was doing!  Her work was creative, diverse and had contrast.  My mind was opened and I was hooked.

That happened to be the last meeting of the year, so I waited two months for my next dose of inspiration.  At the August meeting, the president was asking for a volunteer to organize programs for the next year.  Why not?!  I jumped in head first, and it has been the best thing I’ve done for myself since our move.

So, over the last few years I’ve been Program Chair, Community Projects Chair, Website Maintenance, Quilt Show Chair, Vice President and now President.  I love this group of ladies (and a gentleman or two)!
There is so much to look forward to this year and in the years to come.  I hope you will visit us and join the fun.
